If you’re looking for a free round of golf, don’t forget to hit up a member of the Costa Mesa City Council.
This month, each member got 20 free rounds at the Mesa Verde Country Club – a city-owned course that’s now managed by a private firm.
Apparently, when the golf course was privatized back in the late 1990s, free play was a real problem and the course wasn’t making any money. In the operating agreement, the city now gets 100 free rounds but City Manager Alan Roeder told council members few people are using them.
And he doesn’t want them either.
Councilwoman Katrina Foley has hit up the city for the tickets for charities and that landed on other council members’ radar screen, Roeder said.
So he put the issue back in front of them.
Most weren’t happy about it, especially after hearing an update about budget cuts.
“There’s certainly a bit of irony in the timing of this,” said Councilman Eric Bever, who voted against the proposal.
Another Councilmember, Wendy Leece, didn’t vote against the idea but she kicked her allotment right back to Roeder.
So in addition to Foley, the place to go for free golf is right back to the city manager’s office.
